New Series: Keen’s Apartment Rescue
This is Mike Keen, a hip, mid-20s programmer, who is looking to revamp his tiny apartment with my aid!

So far, Mike (whom we affectionately call Keen) hasn’t done much decorating. Since his place is small, we’re going to be looking for things that serve as decor and are very functional. Here is a preview of his space as it looks right now:

Small & Fun Laundry Rooms
I am one of those rare people who like to do laundry. It’s mainly because it’s something I can get done relatively quickly and feel liek I accomplished something. I re-did my laundry room a few months ago, and now it’s an even more enjoyable task. Here are some other small & fun laundry rooms. Organization and bright colors are encouraged.
This is a modern, more industrial look, but I like it:

The all-around turquoise in this small space makes it hard to feel anything but joyous when you’re inside:

DIY: Paper Mache Lampshades
Though it would be a time-consuming project, I think these lampshades would be a fairly easy process once the paper was cut in the shapes that you desired. Laura Lights on Etsy is the source for my inspiration, but they cost $175! If you have a die cut and a fibrous lampshade (think hanging lantern material; Laura uses Kinwashi paper), it’s doable. Check out her amazing shades to get some ideas:
Apartment Trend Watch: Back in Black
Painting with black and getting it right:

I think white plays an important role in all of these rooms. Whether it is the only accent color, or it is integrated with another palette like greens or browns, it is needed to counterbalance the heaviness of the black. What other rooms in homes have you seen painted black? Do you like it?
