Doing-It-Myself: The Laundry Room

Well, after a long two days, the laundry room is finished!

To refresh your memory, here are the BEFOREs:

See the DURING and AFTERs after the jump.

First, I cleaned everything out of there and taped off the trim and doors:

Taping it off

If you recall, I wanted a laundry cart, to remove the shelf and to paint the place the same green as my kitchen.  Well, the first obstacle I ran into was the shelf.  It was attached to the wall with aboooooout 30,000 screws.  And I couldn’t find shelving that I loved at Home Depot, so I decided to keep it.  I removed the long arm supports on the bottom to free up a little space, though:

Once I had completed the painting, it was time to get organized.  I found a three-shelf unit but it did not have wheels like I had initially wanted.  I bought it anyway, figuring I could make it work.  Instead of storing the chemicals on it, I figured I could use it for the shoes.  I was so sick of having to look at those shoes on the top shelf:

Finally, I added a couple of little framed art prints my mom bought me awhile back.  I want to put something above the top shelf, but I am thinking I might paint a quote, since I haven’t found any artwork I like.  What do you think about “Air your dirty laundry” in great lettering?

the after

Lastly, I just put a hook for the leashes (they were hanging from the shelf before) and added a small trashcan for dryer sheets and lint:

Time spent: approximately 5 hours (3 hours of painting on the first day, 2 hours of touch-ups, cart assembly, cleaning and hanging up frames on the second)

Money spent: $19.97 on the cart + $13.00 on roller and paint pan = $32.97

And now, the Schnauzer approval:

He likes it!

He likes it!

Looks great! I did a similar project a few years back with a budget of $200 i was able to replace the useless wire shelf with cheap wall hanging cabinets – they added a ton of storage and no longer did i have to look at my mess, it was all behind closed cabinet doors. For under $200 you can buy them new at Lowes http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=248006-59890-W3015.WV.WH&lpage=none

or try out the local habitat for humanity. In my laundry room we hung them directly above the washer/dryer – looks good and they are super functional.
